The a-beta is another in our innovative line of in-situ optical instruments for the demanding needs of the ocean sciences community. The performance that the a-beta offers can be found nowhere else (see spec sheet). One side of the a-beta measures diffuse attenuation and the other side measures optical backscattering. The backscattering measurement is calibrated to provide the backscattering coefficient bb and the volume scattering function at 140 degrees. Moreover, the backscattering measurement is used in a robust scattering-correction algorithm to convert the diffuse attenuation into an accurate absorption coefficient a.
The a-beta is nearly as easy to use as a flashlight. Simply flip a switch and it starts logging data internally. Its on-board computer can be programmed for almost any type of data collection schedule. The internal batteries are rechargeable and provide up to 36 hours of continuous operation. If you prefer real-time data collection, the a-beta is easy to connect directly to a computer, where data can be displayed and stored using our highly acclaimed HydroSoft software package.
